Brazil secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Colombia on Friday. The hosts rode a first-half surge to take an early lead, but Colombia pulled one back in the second half and nearly equalized in the closing minutes.

Neymar opened the scoring for Brazil in the seventh minute, tapping in a cross from David Luiz. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 69th minute with a goal from Thiago Silva, who headed home a corner kick.

Colombia got a lifeline in the 80th minute when James Rodríguez converted a penalty, but they were unable to find an equalizer despite a late flurry of chances. The win was Brazil's second narrow escape in the knockout rounds, after a 1-0 victory over Chile in the round of 16.
