Five Injured in Brooklyn Synagogue Fire

Initial reports indicate three firefighters among the injured

NEW YORK -- Five people were hurt, two critically, when a fire broke out early Friday morning at an apartment above a synagogue in Brooklyn.

The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. at the Congregation B'nai Israel synagogue on East 17th Street in the Borough Park neighborhood. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the third floor of the building.

Two people were critically hurt in the fire. One was a resident of the apartment where the fire started, and the other was a firefighter who was injured while battling the blaze. The other three people who were injured, including two other firefighters, were treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
