Liz Truss Resigns as Prime Minister After Turbulent 45 Days

Political Turmoil Leads to Second Tory Leadership Election in Four Months

Former Foreign Secretary to Step Down

Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after only 45 days in office. Her departure follows a whirlwind of political turmoil that has rocked the Conservative Party and the country.

In her resignation speech delivered outside Downing Street, Truss acknowledged the "significant challenges" she faced during her brief tenure and said that she "could not deliver the mandate" she had been given. Her resignation marks the shortest-lived premiership in British history.

Truss's resignation triggers a second Tory leadership election in just four months, following the resignation of Boris Johnson in July. The party will now begin the process of selecting a new leader, who will become the UK's third Prime Minister in 2022.

The race to replace Truss is expected to be fiercely contested, with several potential candidates already emerging. Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and House of Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt are considered to be among the frontrunners.
